MINDFUL MONDAY PART ONE

THIS POST IS THE FIRST ONE OF OUR FAMILIES FIREPLAN..IT CAN BE ADAPTED FOR MOST SITUATIONS AND IS BY NO MEANS PERFECT BUT WORKS FOR US.

IF YOU CAN USE ANY OF THESE IDEAS THAT WOULD BE GREAT AND IF YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS THEN THAT TOO IS GREAT.THIS IS FOR MY HUBBY AND I AND OUR PETS..ALWAYS TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION GUESTS YOU MAY HAVE AND HOW TO ACCOMODATE THEIR NEEDS.

THE GENERAL PRE SEASON PREPARATION…

DURING SPRING WE CLEAN UP ANY OUTSIDE AREAS THAT HAVE DOWNED TREES AND GENERAL SCRUB THAT IS OUT OF CONTROL..WE HAVE A GOOD CLEARANCE AROUND OUR HOUSE AND MAKE SURE WE KEEP IT CLEAR.

ON 11 ACRES WE WILL NEVER BE TOTALLY SAFE..THIS IS THE FIRST THING……DO YOU KNOW YOUR ENVIRONMENT AND DO YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE IN KEEPING YOURSELF SAFE IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION..IF NOT YOU NEED TO HAVE AN ALTERNATE PLAN TO BEING AT HOME..IN A CRISIS YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE A DECISION ON WHAT TO DO AND THIS CAN BE FATAL. YOUR ANIMALS WILL SENSE YOUR FEAR AND REACT ACCORDINGLY THIS CAN ADD TO THE STRESS.AN EMERGENCY MAY BE ONGOING..BUSHFIRES CAN RAGE FOR A LONG TIME FOR EXAMPLE AND SOME PEOPLE DON’T REALISE THEY WILL BE ACTIVELY PROTECTING THEIR PROPERTY FOR DAYS..ARE YOU UP TO THIS..IF NOT THEN YOUR PLAN SHOULD BE TO BE OUT OF YOUR HOME.

NOT ALL EMERGENCIES ARRIVE AT CONVENIENT TIMES..WHAT IF SOMETHING HAPPENS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT,WHILE YOU ARE AT WORK OR AWAY FROM HOME..WHAT ABOUT YOUR PETS DO YOU HAVE BACK UP PLANS.

AT THE MOMENT WE HAVE NO ACCESS TO OUR HIGHWAY FROM THE NORMAL ROUTE DUE TO A BRIDGE BEING REPLACED..WE HAVE TO HAVE ALTERNATE ROUTES AND THEY ARE BOTH LONGER THAN OUR USUAL ONE. EVEN A WELL KNOWN ROAD OR ROUTE IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSHFIRE CAN BE TREACHEROUS AND AS UNFAMILIAR AS A STRANGE ROAD.

DO YOU UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH TRAFFIC WILL BE ON THE ROAD ALL TRYING TO LEAVE AT ONCE.

DURING BLACK SATURDAY THE STREET LIGHTS CAME ON IN THE AFTERNOON THE SKY WAS BLACK AND ASH WAS FALLING..VISIBILTY IN THE FIRE AREAS WAS ZERO AND MANY PEOPLE PERISHED ON THEIR OWN ROADS,ROADS THEY TRAVELLED DAILY BECAME DEATH TRAPS.

THERE WILL BE WILDLIFE HURT CONFUSED AND WANDERING ROADS,STOCK,HORSES CATS AND DOGS COULD BE ALSO ON THE ROADS.TREES COMING DOWN AND ROADS BLOCKED OFF.

IS YOUR CAR ALWAYS FULL OF PETROL OR GAS DURING A DANGEROUS SEASON,ESCAPING WITH LIMITED PETROL IS NOT AN OPTION,YOU MAY BE TRAVELLING A LONG TIME.

ALL THESE THINGS NEED TO BE CONSIDERED AND BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF ON YOUR CAPABILITIES.

DO YOUR FAMILY KNOW OF YOUR MOVEMENTS IN A CRISIS..HAVE YOU TOLD FRIENDS AND LOVED ONES AND NEIGHBOURS WHAT YOU WOULD DO..THIS SAVES THEM TRYING TO FIND YOU WORRYING ETC..PHONES GO DOWN,MOBILES LOSE RECEPTION…ENSURE PEOPLE KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING.ENSURE THOSE THAT LIVE IN YOUR HOUSE ALL HAVE THE PLAN IN THEIR MINDS TOO,IF YOU ARE NOT HOME AND THEY ARE,IF KIDS ARE AT SCHOOL WHAT IS THE PLAN,THE MORE YOU ALL TALK AND GO THROUGH THE DRILL TOGETHER THE LESS LIKELY CONFUSION SETS IN.

I FOR ONE DO NOT HAVE THE ABILITY TO FIGHT A FIRE AND PROTECT MY HOME,I DO NOT WANT TO BE IN A BUSH THAT IS BURNING I DON’T HAVE THE MENTAL OR PHYSICAL STAMINA TO DO SO.WITH THIS IN MIND I ALSO HAVE TO LOOK AT IF I AM STUCK HERE,WHERE AM I SAFEST WITH MY ANIMALS AND HOW DO I KEEP MYSELF AS SAFE AS POSSIBLE.

ANOTHER GOOD IDEA IS TO HAVE A ‘DRY’ RUN..PRACTICE LEAVING AS IF IT WAS AN EMERGENCY..YOU MIGHT FRIGHTEN YOURSELF AT JUST HOW LONG IT TAKES!! WE DID THIS LAST SEASON WHEN AN EARLY FIRE BROKE OUT…I WAS DISGUSTED WITH HOW UNPREPARED I ACTUALLY WAS..THIS BRINGS ME TO ANOTHER POINT..PLANS ARE ALWAYS EVOLVING..YOU WILL FIND THEY CHANGE AS YOU GET MORE IDEAS,THROW OUT SOME OTHERS (EXAMPLE I HAD BEEN CARRYING HUGE PHOTOS IN FRAMES WITH ME BEFORE I REALISED THAT I WAS BEING STUPID,I HAD SMALL PRINTS OF THE SAME PHOTOS,AND IN REALITY WOULD JUST GET THEM REDONE AS IF THE HOUSE BURNED DOWN I WOULD HAVE NOWHERE TO HANG THEM ANYWAY AND WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THE FRAMES SO WHAT WAS I TAKING UP CAR SPACE FOR???)

SO WITH ALL THIS I CONTINUE. WE BURN OFF DURING SPRING,CLEAN GUTTERS OUT,CHECK FOR GAPS IN DOORS AND WINDOWS ,WE HAVE APPS ON OUR MOBILES WITH EMERGENCY ALERTS IN OUR AREA FROM BOTH THE CFA ( COUNTY FIRE AUTHORITY) AND EMERGENCY AUS..I AM SURE OTHER COUNTRIES WILL HAVE SIMILAR APPS..IF NOT ASK YOUR SERVICES WHY NOT!! WE ALSO HAVE A RADIO SCANNER,THIS IS IN THE KITCHEN TURNED ON ALL THE TIME,WHEN I LEAVE THE HOUSE IT IS IN MY CAR AND WHEN I WALK AROUND THE PROPERTY IT IS HOOKED ONTO MY JEANS..IT SCANS THE FIRE AND POLICE BANDS AND GIVES ME REAL TIME INFO ON EMERGENCIES,MY FACEBOOK GETS ALERTS ALSO FROM THESE SAME SERVICES AND ALSO THE BUREAU OF METEROLOGY .WE WATCH THE WEATHER AND ALSO TOWNS HAVE FIRE RATING DANGER SIGNS THAT LET US KNOW THE FIRE RISK FOR EACH DAY.

THEN I PACK.

ALL HARD COPY PHOTOS,DOCUMENTS AND THINGS THAT SIMPLY CANNOT BE REPLACED (GRANDMAS CHINA ETC) IS MOVED TO A RELATIVES HOUSE WHO IS IN A SAFE AREA. FOR PEOPLE WHO CAN’T DO THIS I SUGGEST PERHAPS A SAFE BOX AT A BANK,A STORAGE UNIT MAYBE SHARE THE COSTS WITH NEIGHBOURS ,SCAN HARD COPY PHOTOS ,IF YOU WORK IN A SAFE AREA PERHAPS THERE IS AVAILABLE SAFE STORAGE THERE,MAYBE SUGGEST IT AFTER ALL WE ALL LIVE IN COMMUNITIES THAT HAVE DISASTERS AND NEED TO LOOK AT USING THE SENSE OF COMMUNITY.

ONCE I HAVE ALL THESE SAFELY OUT I SET ABOUT MY GO PACK..I HAVE TWO DIFFERENT CRITERIA,ONE IS IN MY CAR ALL THE TIME ALL SEASON,THE OTHER IS IN THE ROOM CLOSEST TO THE DOOR I WOULD LEAVE BY.

THE REASON BEING I CANNOT LEAVE CERTAIN THINGS IN MY CAR IN SUMMER HEAT..LAPTOPS,CAMERAS,MEDICINES,ETC..SO THESE ARE INSIDE.

WHEN SORTING OUT YOUR GO PACK THINK BEYOND A DAY ,ESPECIALLY FOR YOUR PETS..

THINK OF THE PARTICULAR REASON YOU ARE GOING..FIRE FLOOD EARTHQUAKE TYPHOON HURRICANE CYCLONE BLIZZARD..ALL REQUIRE DIFFERENT THINGS TO BE PACKED IN REGARDS TO THE ‘WEATHER’ BUT STILL REQUIRE SIMILAR EMERGENCY THINGS.

EVERYONE WILL HAVE A DIFFERENT GO PACK BUT THEY SHOULD ALL HAVE SOME VERY BASIC AND VERY IMPORTANT ITEMS.

MY NEXT MONDAY BLOGGIE I WILL LIST THESE ITEMS..IT IS QUITE DETAILED SO I SHALL SAVE IT FOR THEN.

I HOPE YOU ALL STAY SAFE IN YOUR NECK OF THE WOODS AND THAT MOTHER NATURE HAS NOTHING BUT SUNNY SMILES FOR YOU 🙂

  1. bev. using the cell to post my response so please excuse abrupt sentences ets. but this warranted saying this is an excellent post and piece of info; if you are on facebook etc, please re post there as well. none of us will ever know exactly how we will react in an emerengy and if we have a thought out plan ahead of time it sure wont make the emergency go away but it just may save a life of a friend neighbor loved one including pets as well as your self. ten stars outta 5 for this !!!!! laura. a few things I have done when bak on the pc tomorrow XXXX

    • Thanks so much Laura,i agree I have shared it on fb we had a hideous time during Black Saturday and people and animals died needlessly..the ferocity was awesome and I man that in a bad way..one book I have read showed just how we should have known what was coming but failed to see it..if we all share ideas we can hopefully save maybe even one life then it is all worth it! Thanks for your kind words..i have a series of posts to do including pics and some great sites that even if they are from our Australian services they may inspire a new idea 🙂 look forward to us all sharing and making our worlds a little safer 🙂 xxxx Bev

  2. thank you for this most important information. We have blogged about fire safety on Dakota’s blog a few times but it can never be shared enough. Especially where you live and all of the horrid fires that take place there.

    • Thanks Caren,i agree people can become complacent, where we used to live the catch cry by the older members of the community was ..we haven’t had a fire through here in years !! which to me says then it is overdue!!

  3. SOOO smart to have “a plan”…..you often hear when disaster strikes that people who have lost EVERYTHING say they “wish” they’d had a plan. Fortunately we have little in the way of issues like that – we’ve had earthquakes and one tornado but in our 18 years here on top of our hill we’ve been quite lucky. We do have a bit of a plan should we have little time though and it certainly includes ID and Sam and actually little else…..we need to prove who we are and we would never leave our “baby” – – – EVER.

Bravo for you and your most comprehensive plan…..you need it there for sure – let’s hope you never have to use it!

    Hugs, Pam

    • We do too Pam,but sadly with these fires a lot are started deliberately and all too often with hideous results. We monitor conditions all year and during this time we have a fair idea of how the season will play out..you have a great idea with ID and of course making sure Sam is with you.So many people left their precious animals to die due to no planning and this is not an option for us!

    • It’s a bit of poor form that authorities have not worked out how to keep the public aware! always we go by the rule here regardless of all else use your eyes and hears and be aware of whats happening by looking outside! even the best warnings can’t be beaten by seeing for yourself what is outside your own window 🙂

  5. My mother in law lives in the perth hills and was hit by the fire two years ago. she has a very large fireproof safe bolted to the floor (a requested xmas present from us one year). She keeps everything valuable in it over the summer. One of her friends lost her entire house and the only thing left was the fireproof safe – so they work!

  6. This is a great post.

Wildfires are really scary, my heart goes out to the people who live in the path.

I live in the midwest so we don’t have wildfires. But everyone should have an evacuation plan and adapt it for their area. We had a power outage for 5 days when it was 24 degrees. Brrrrr. We were somewhat unprepared at that time but it was an eye opener and we got prepared.
