THE SUMMER OF CHAFFE

DO YOU HAVE A POOL AT YOUR PLACE STAN...?

DO YOU HAVE A POOL AT YOUR PLACE STAN…?

I CAN’T UPOAD MY KOALA PIC..EVERYTHINGS ON SLOW MODE..ME INCLUDED..IT’S 8.30 AM AND ALREADY IN THE LAST FIVE MINUTES THE TEMP HAS RISEN FROM 30 TO 33 AND RISING LIKE ONE OF MY BEST SPONGES..WE HAVE HAD ANOTHER BAD NIGHT TEMPS NOT LETTING UP LIGHTNING STRIKES STARTING FIRES AROUND THE AREA AND THREE DROPS OF RAIN..THE POOR PETS HAVE HAD ENOUGH AND WE HAVE NO BREAK UNTIL THE WEEKEND..WE HAD TEA LAST NIGHT ON THE VERANDAH WATCHING SMOKE OVER THE HIGHWAY TO OUR NORTH ABOUT 3 KMS AWAY..WE HAD THE RADIO SCANNER ON AND LISTENED TO THE CONVERSATIONS BETWEEN OUR FIRIES…WHILE THE DARK THUNDEROUS CLOUDS WERE OVERHEAD..OUR MOBILE PHONE APPS GOING OFF WITH FIRE ALERTS TELLING US OF ALL THE STRIKES AROUND THE 20-50KM RADIUS.

LISTENING TO HOW HARD THESE POOR BUGGERS WORK IN THIS HEAT AND WITH THE DANGER IS BOTH FRIGHTENING AND AMAZING.

TWO SMALL TANKERS HAD BECOME BOGGED IN WATER CHANNELS..A FRIGHTENING SCENARIO FOR THESE VOLUNTEERS..ALL SAFE BUT THE CALL WENT OUT FOR TRACTORS TO GET THEM OUT..HEARING THEM TALK OF FIRE FLANKS AND HOW MANY UNITS NEEDED..FEELING FRUSTRATION FOR THEM AS GUY LINES FROM THE APPLE ORCHARD (BIG WIRES THAT AFIX THE NETTING OVER THE TREES TO THE GROUND) WERE HAMPERING ACCESS TO AREAS…HEARING WATER AIRCRAFT BUT NOT SEENG THEM MEANS THEY ARE CLOSE AND LOW TO THE GROUND IN LIGHNTING CONDITIONS AND DARK CLOUD..HEARING THAT SPOT FIRES HAD STARTED IN PADDOCKS AND THEY NEEDED PEOPLE TO GET ONTO THOSE..ALL THIS DONE ON A VOLUNTEER BASIS….

OUR SUMMER SEEMS TO CONSIST OF THIS..STRIKE TEAMS..WATER BOMBERS..FIRE FRONTS..WATCH AND ACT ALERTS..THE FIRE WAS FIRST NOTED ON OUR APPS AT 7.30PM AND THEY FINALLY LEFT TIRED AND HUNGRY AT NEARLY 11PM THIS WAS NOT A HUGE FIRE EITHER …

IT’S NOW 34.5Β C IN THE TIME IT HAS TAKEN ME TO TYPE THIS..THE DAY IS TO BE BAD AGAIN..STORMS AGAIN…BUT TOMORROW WILL BE THE BIGGIE….BY THEN NO MOISTURE WILL BE LEFT IN THE GROUND FUEL AS THE FIRE SERVICES CHIEF EXPLAINS …THE STATE WILL BE BAKED DRY….

WE ARE READY TO GO IF WE NEED TO WE ONLY STAYED BECAUSE WE HAD FRST HAND INFO FROM THE FIRE TELLING US ASΒ IT WASΒ  HAPPENING WHAT WAS GOING ON….

AGAIN I DON’T KNOW HOW MANY MORE SUMMERS I CAN DO THIS..THE BOUNCE BACK GETS HARDER..THE LACK OF SLEEP IS DRAINING AND THE FEAR FACTOR NEVER EASES..

I MAY NOT HAVE ACCESS TO A LOT OF BLOG STUFF TODAY..POWER CUTS WERE MADE YESTERDAY AND MANY PEOPLE HAD POWER TURNED OFF DUE TO CONSUMPTION…I WILL BE ON FACEBOOK AS ALERTS COME THROUGH THERE ALSO…

I WILL LEAVE YOU WITH THIS FUNNY TYPICAL AUSSIE CONVERSATION I HEARD AS THINGS WERE WINDING DOWN LAST NIGHT IN OUR LITTLE TOWN AT THE FIRE SCENE.

“OKAY..WE HAVE PRETTY MUCH GOT ON TOP OF THIS UP THIS END HERE..CAN WE PACK UP AND HEAD HOME WE HAVE SOME PRETTY TIRED BLOKES HERE AND WE NEED FUEL ?”

“YEP ..HAVE A VIOLIN HERE MATE WILL START PLAYING FOR YOU ALL…OK PACK UP GET SOME FUEL THEN MEET UP FOR BRIEFING”

“BY FUEL I MEAN FOOD”

“OK HEAD IN THEN…STOP FOR FUEL FIRST ”

35.2C NOW…………………………….SAY NO MORE…HAVE A GREAT DAY

  1. Holy shit! Is there anything at all you can do other than be prepared and be ready to go when needed? Now I really understand why you have the preparedness kit. I wish I had something goofy to say to make it easier!

    • Hahhaah all good…no all we can do is be ready..we can’t drag the pets out in this weather everytime it’s a bad day and that’s the killer..if it was just us..well hubby would be at work and I would be at the pool…or antartica ..just bloody tiring my friend..and it’s not just sweaty nights but you are waiting for the scanner to go off..Great Southern Land she is a bitch at times πŸ˜‰ xx

        • No no well..we are bizarrely enough on town water…go figure…we have a dam but it’s not a reliable water source with roo poo leeches and yabbies for all..we have no water tanks yet either with fencing taking all the extra money so if the water goes we are in the poop..joy oh joy πŸ˜‰ Hurricanes would be pretty damn freaky..

          • Okay you have to define yabbies for me! Roo poo, leeches, I get! I’d rather the poo than the leeches! Hurricanes are easy, they come at you slowly and you have loads of time to move out of the way. I’m scared of tornadoes and earthquakes – no warning!

            • Yabbies are like freshwater prawny things..very delish and sweet bit I always wait for one to think the dogs boy bits are sausages when they go for a dip….try explaining to the vet that my dog got pinched on his willy by a yabby bwahahaah look em up quite sweet looking little crustaceans πŸ™‚ I am with you tornadoes and earthquakes the thought is terrifying…bushfires sometimes you get no warning other than the weather ..if one started bu lightning down our back paddock then it would be up the hill on the house before we had much warning at all…..

              • Oh! It’s a crawfish, or crawdad as we said in the southern US. Suck the head and eat the tail! I never sucked the head, that just seemed disgusting.

Now that’s another thing – lightning with no rain! About as bad as a tornado 😦

                • That is a shame, I love a good thunderstorm myself, but never had to worry for fire like you do. Grump away! It seems the proper thing to do. I will do my best to post less about burning my holiday tree and more water/frost/coolness photos! I’m off to bed, but it seems you are always up when I’m up in the morning, too! X

  4. Best is to stay indoors Bev. I always feel sorry for those who has to work in this heat and all the animals that are not as lucky as ours. Here it’s 32.2 degrees C today – supposedly some heat wave and according to your news editor it’s going to rise to 40 degrees C. With extreme weather like this I am always worried about my wild monkey children. Hope they are doing fine but they know they can always come for a swim. πŸ˜‰

Take care hon and stay cool. *big hugs*

  5. I don’t know Bev, I’m thinking I couldn’t do what you are doing. We all do what we have to do and that is home for you but… I freak out with weather extremes so when CH and I decide to leave The Tiny Ten we will try to find some place with more moderate weather. We like Florida but it has its issues too.. πŸ™‚ Santa Fe is good but it gets HOT there too! Thinking about you and sending you prayers for safety.

    • You get past it don’t you Pix…when we move it will be to less land and not in a bushfire zone..problem is by tomorrow we will be stuffed and it’s the worst day..already we are crabby with each other and i’m getting muddled..but you have to be on your A game..i love the bush but she doesn’t love us all the time..it slightly cools and we all go outside cats as well and I am eyes everywhere for snakes coming out…perhaps I am becoming too chicken …it’s hard finding that piece of paradise where you have the quiet safety and access to what you need without needing to win a lottery..:)

  6. Oh my dear friend. Please be careful. I never really knew how violent the summers were in Australia. That’s terrible. With the fires and the heat, you need a summer place. Looking around my bedroom at the Hotel Thompson. I would surely share my friends πŸ™‚ XOXO – Bacon

  7. I like how you have highlighted what it is like for the firemen, it must be horrendous, they not only have to be out in the heat of the day, but they have to get in more heat to fight the fires.

    • Exact;y poor buggers and to here they were bogged was damn scary…huge respect for what they do…they should be well compensated by our government as far as I am concerned!

  8. I hope you are able to stay cool. I also hope that the fires are put out soon. Firefighters are awesome. I think here in the U.S. people gained a whole new perspective of firefighters after 9/11/2001. They could never be paid enough money for their hard work and bravery.

            • It’s certainly horrid to see…poor things…we have a bit of warning at least …when the Black Saturday fires were on we used to collect fruit and veg from supermarkets and take them to a wildlife shelter that miraculously survived in Chum creek..burnt to the ground all around..the road was winding and both sides black toothpick looking trees..we had the privilege of being there and gently stroking a big roo ..they had covered his eyes with a towel to keep him calm while the vet who had arrived took his bandages off his feet and re did the burns with cream and re wrapped them..poor thing…such fear he must have felt…it is a hideous thing bushfires 😦
