THE JOY OF A COOLER DAY

Well the relief this morning to wake up feeling a bit cold was wonderful! To put my dressing gown on…sheer joy!

Yesterday was beyond hideous…the temp was hot the wind was incredibly strong and gusting different directions…we had little sleep and both Hubby and I looked like day of the walking dead.

The day started with the poor pups looking at us as if we could somehow stop the heat,Doc was not coping..Forrest was trying to get comfy..it was not good. The temp started to rise rapidly and Hubby was nodding off due to lack of sleep..so I sent him to bed to catch up on some sleep. I was concerned if we had to bunk out he would be too tired to drive.

While he slept I listened to our scanner..all the firies were checking their comms for the day…they had all been waiting at the fire station the day before..the carpark full so I knew they were all ready to roll.

Then the alerts started a couple close enough to keep an eye on but far enough not to warrant panic, funny some fires further away are more of a risk because of their topography.

When people say the grass is brown and dry it’s not quite right, see at the moment the grass is almost red as if sunburnt and it’s still growing,we can’t slash due to rocks so it’s not a really good position to be in.

Hubby got up and we all just lazed around watching the alerts and seeing the news…I ran a bath and got my bathers on and hopped in with Doc..the heat was radiating off him..took awhile but it did the trick he cooled down…then rubbed himself from one end of the house to the other on any rug or carpet he could find..Forrest was next…carried in by Hubby…no mean feat he’s a big boy πŸ™‚

By 5pm I had to go lie down I was starting to feel sick from tiredness and the heat ..Hubby Β woke me at 8pm I could have slept till the cows came home ..bless his cottons he made tea for us and we watched the news …

I will never become accustomed to seeing the ferocity of our bushfires….the main highway was closed and houses on the urban fringe were burning…again our fire heroes out there in atrocious conditions putting their lives on the line for us.

I feel bad complaining with what they are dealing with!!

All in all we had 5000 men and women out there fighting fires..seems we have lost at leats 20 homes,no idea of stocklosses, one dog ,wildlife no clue..fires are still burning tonight and emergency warnings in place for several areas..there was the smell of smoke today but none in sight for us.

When Hubby went to work this morning he had to get off the train and on a bus as part of the rail line is damaged he said it’s a pretty huge area of burnt ground up there..

Tonight it’s 17c outside…thankyou!! I feel like I may be human again ..the girls went outside and stretched their legs and relaxed..happy on the porch in mild sun puddles and the dogs have pretty much slept the day away..

I hope the firies get these fires under control soon as people still have that fear and sense of helplessness I their lives in these areas..may the sun calm down and the winds stop.

  1. Well it’s nice to hear you have a bit of a cool down even if it’s short-lived – it’s SOMETHING…some relief anyway. No doubt you would rather be just about anywhere but there right now. So sad……that photo looks INVITING!

  2. We are so pleased to hear the temps have dropped. We feel for you and no worries you carry on complaining. Here it is still raining and there are more flood warnings across the country. The Thames in on red alert and everybody is sick of the weather. We wish we could send you our rain as we plenty to spare and it is going to be like this till March. Have a marvellous Monday and stay cool.
    Best wishes Molly (quack, quack)

  4. I am glad to hear that you had a day of cooler weather. Now if you could just have more cool days and no fires. I read your blog early this morning. When I went to leave this morning my car got stuck in the end of the driveway. My dear hubby did not snow blow the driveway because he swore the snow was “not that deep.” He got out of the driveway in his truck. The whole time I was shoveling snow I kept thinking that I do not have to worry about fire. I’m glad I read your blog early because it put things in perspective for me.

    • Thanks Judy..i also though cannot imagine having the disruption of snow, I feel for those whomcannot afford to keep warm and the animals out in the bitter cold, people who can’t get out to drs appts or vets or shops due to snow. guess all extremes of weather are awful. I also feel for our firies who despite the hideous heat still get out there and fight..i hope you get some Spring soon and that our Autumn arrives soon…too many extremes in the world !

  5. We are happy that you have cooled off, even if it is just a day. As we have the extremes of both here, I can say the heat is worse than the cold.
    Stay safe dear friends!

  6. Glad to hear it’s cooler there now Bev. I don’t like bushfires either and we sometimes have that problem here on the mountain in winter. I always worry about the vervets and baboons. Take care and enjoy the cool temperatures hon. One of these days Autumn will be here. πŸ˜€

    • Poor animals, they have no way to help themselves and they must be so fearful,,i can understand your concern for the baboons and sweet vervets..they rely on those trees to live in..we do have animals that need the trees to live in here but mostly land animals..it has heated up again now..with maybe some rain soon but usually it misses us….bummer πŸ˜‰ And yay to Autumn πŸ™‚

  12. My son lives on the urban fringe. He was evacuated once. On the day that you wrote this, he was here in Qld with us and watching his phone when he got the message that his house sitter was evacuating again. It was tense for a while but their house was okay.
    I don’t understand people who light the fires – I really don’t.

Housing says they are ripping out our patios this Spring & putting cement pads in…there is nothing wrong with our patios & I am not looking forward to the noise & mess or being yet again confinded inside….
Only a few inches fell; nothing major πŸ˜‰

    • I agree…same with me I hate being cooped up and in the heat or the real winter I get annoyed…nothing worse than having to put up with workmen and their noise either…or wasting money on things that don’t need to change…..I al glad only a bit fell..we are quite warm here today..and I am making pies so that should be interesting ahahahaha πŸ™‚ hugs Bev xxxxxxxxxx

  17. In my better days I used to do alot of winter sports & even winter hiking. With the bone disease & Fibro that has ceased. I ususally go out for winter walks tho every winter…I have gone for 2 block walks only this winter because the footing is atrocious. I would need to use the walker but with all the snow & ice that is not practical….so I totter along to the corner shop & back!
As for the patio palaver; I am hoping Housing does not have the $$$ to do this stupid unnecessary project πŸ˜‰ We can hope!
MMMMM pies…..sounds yummy; try not to bake yourself ok??
