Ringtail Possum visits

After having a whinge last night about how crappy I felt I woke this morning to see I had a visitor.

Hello Possum! Meet Virgil the verandah possum

Hello Possum! Meet Virgil the verandah possum

This little guy/gal for some as yet unknown reason decided my Jasmine was a nice place to hang out!
He is safe as the kitties and pups do not go out there..but of course I was concerned at why he was there!
I had a look and could see no obvious signs of injury and he looked me square back in the eyes..
Now that worries me as wildlife generally are not so blasΓ© about humans..
I rang the Wildlife peeps and waited their call..and took some pics of this cutie!

Look

Little footsies

He is not really small but not that big so maybe a teenager..maybe scared from his home by Magpies or ravens.
Maybe curious and wandered off and found himself at dawn with the need to hideout for the day..maybe seeking somewhere cool..i do not know.

Look at that sweet face!

Look at that sweet face!

Whatever the reason I placed some water in a bowl for him but no food..i would hate to think he had some tummy issues and it is always best to err on the side of caution..
Virgil the verandah possum is a Ringtail..they are not a pest and are like all wildlife here protected by laws..he is a night guy and a marsupial,he has a long prehensile tail which he uses to get around and cling onto things like my Jasmine!
They are not really pests as unlike Brushtails they tend to not use humans buildings to live in.
They are very sweet and I have not seen a ringtail for a long time here so this is either good news..or not good as he may be in trouble.
I had a visit from Kerry who was contacted by HEPBURN WILDLIFE, we had a look at him and she suggested that we leave him and I check tonight with a torch to see if he has moved on..if he has fine ..but I think if he is there in the morning we will maybe get him off in care..just in case he is not well.

So my day was made a little brighter by a visit from Virgil..not my usual Roos or Echidnas or even snakes!
I am still battling my eyes today but thankyou to everyone who has sent their hugs my way…always so much appreciated..so I say thanks with some cute pics!

UPDATE:At 9.30pm I checked and Virgil had not moved,i noticed his breathing was a bit harder and wondered if it was because he was now waking up,it is very windy tonight!..Kerry rang and we discussed it and I said I would check him later..at 10.00pm..gone..Virgil has bid us adieu and headed to the gumtrees! bon voyage little friend and thanks for dropping by πŸ™‚
Pee ess Hubby is now on a mission to make possum boxes ..we had olanned to do this but as everything else it has been put to the back of the list..until now πŸ™‚

  3. Crikey I hope Virgil/Virginia is ok?? They are beautiful, aye? We see them quite often at our place. We seem to have more ringtails than brushtails. I do chase them but until I learn how to climb trees I don’t think I’m ever going to do much harm to them. Mum keeps a VERY good eye on me when she lets me out at night. Beautiful photos!! Sounds like its not much fun being you at the moment. Hope things improve for you real soon.

  4. Oh Virgil is adorable! Love those eyes and that ringtail……I hope he’s OK and not ill or scared – just coming for a visit before moving on. I think he might have just known that your jasmine was a grand spot for a “rest” before he continued his journey wherever he’s headed now. Bon voyage Virgil!

  5. Thanks for gorgeous possum pics Bev, she looks adorable. I have never seen a ringtail here, but brush tails are regular nightly visitors on the deck. I have just fed a young female outside the door. Old daddy possum Brat has been here for years and is a rugged patriarch. He comes in the house at night time if I haven’t fed him and the door is open. I love it when the females bring their wide eyed baby jockeys around. It’s amazing how they will carry them for months. I haven’t seen a baby in a little while. I hope your eyes start improving soon.

  6. If Virgil wants to travel once, he can visit me. I have a long tail too but I can’t do so much funny things with it like Virgil…
I hope Virgil is ok and he will stay with you for a long time… can they become pets once or are they not really keen to enjoy biped-company?

    • Virgil has headed to his home in the gum trees Easy πŸ™‚ who knows he may visit again! they can as babies become used to people..but I kind of like them to stay wild..the worry is always that if you ever leave then what will new peeps be like..they may find them a pest and hurt them or they could forget how to be wild and not know how to find food and teach their young..they have been known to visit peeps often..but I think with all the bush here we may not get another visit..and yes Virgils tail is maybe more handy than a pups hahahaa πŸ™‚ xxx

  10. What do you mean a possum box? Are you going to capture him and put him back in a wild area? Wouldn’t it be best to leave him alone. I don’t know but really loved the pictures. I have never heard of a possum swinging by his tail…fancy this…very interesting Fozziemum.

    • Shoko possum boxes are built and placed up in trees to act as a safe shelter..we are wild here hahaha so on the 11 acres we have many gumtrees, other critters can scare them away or they can get blown from trees also.so the possum boxes are like safe nesting boxes where possums or sugar gliders can live and raise their young πŸ™‚ like giving them more options for housing πŸ™‚ the wind can blow little sugar gliders out and they have not much chance so we were going to provide boxes for extra security ..this has just made us more determined. Get mum to google sugar glider and wait til you see how sweet they are itty and bitty πŸ™‚ loves Fozziemum xxx

    • Hahah no I don’t think they do! he was happy to be alert and watch me as I took his blue steel shots haahaha πŸ™‚ they are a lot smaller than your possums ,the brush tails are bigger but still not huge..you should google sugar glider..now they are the sweetest itty bitty little things ever..we see them in the dark silouhetted against the trees gliding on thermals through the trees..amazing πŸ™‚ loves Bev xx
