Saying goodbye to boots

Well the weekend was a glorious one to farewell my poor old boots..some people have mentioned they looked pretty good and i agree..sadly looks can be deceiving .

These boots have climbed rocks ,trees and rough terrain in my quest for good photos and in order to wrestle with the bush here..they have jumped fences and given me purchase on the ground when i have had to climb a sheeps back (don’t ask) they have stomped bits of burning bush when burn offs have gone a bit awry and waded through mud when helping out near the dam.

These boots have been at the vets with two snake bites and kicked things in anger when those bites happened. They have run after dogs…cats..and sheep. They haveΒ  climbed ladders and helped me paint fences and walls.

They have been with me while i have trimmed and pruned and hacked my way through scrub, they have been in the kitchen preparing meals with me.

They have been under me while i crawl on the ground taking pics of roos they have been there while i have clipped fencing, dug rocks, weeded, watered, walked the dogs moved the sheep and hung the washing.

They have sat with me under gum trees resting my eyes and listening to the bush, they have been by bonfires watching the flames licking the black skies, they have been with me while i fell asleep with the cats in their catio.

They have helped me build gardens, catios, fences, kitchens, pulled up tiles moved soil and gravel and laid turf .

They have been on my feet while i have laughed and joked they have been on my feet when i have sung and danced in the yard, they have been on my feet when i have yelled and cried..they are my boots.

Sadly the soles are paper thin..many miles have been walked in them. They no longer support my ankles and this is a problem with the rough terrain here.

They sadly are no longer safe and yet still look beautiful..worn and with a patina only a hard working boot can have ..and so this weekend i gave them a new purpose.

I selected some sweet violas..with happy little faces and a cheery disposition i carefully filled them with the best of potting mix and planted these flowers within them.

I gave them a position where they can be not only beautiful but can watch as the new boots take over the hard yards..and they did..the start of the fencing for theΒ  veggie garden took us all weekend..i could almost hear my old boots sigh…

My new boots are good and with time will be great and also much loved..for now they are learning the ropes ..they have a long way to go..

  1. Quite beautiful with the flowers in them. Years ago it was the “in thing” to bronze baby shoes – maybe you can consider that when the next pair are put out to pasture?

  3. Oh you clever girl you – when you mentioned using your old boots in the garden I pictured violas or some other lovely plant spilling from the tops….you did those boots justice my dear. They fit right in – like they were MEANT to be there. The new boots look sturdy and comfy and ready to work with you as you whip your homestead into shape inside and out. Oh the stories our old boots could tell…………………

    • Thankyou Pam πŸ™‚ I think they look mighty purrty now and a bit less manly…and they look so sweet resting there instead of working ! and the new boots are dusty and scuffed and already hard at it! I agree the stories they could tell….Loves Bev xxx

  4. What a brilliant way to treat an old pair of boots. They’re absolutely perfect just like that. Meanwhile, we’re exhausted from reading this post. Mom says either you work way too hard or we’re a couple of spoiled, lazy city girls. Or both…

    • Hahahaha oh Cupcake I think us girls in the bush all just work in a different way..we kind of have to..but I still think city girls work super hard too! I used to work in Melbourne many moons ago as a young girl..and it was hard work…just mote mental than physical πŸ™‚ I like to think I am less mental now..maybe! and thankyou the boots are happy where they are now…no more hard work just enjoying watching the new boots earn their stripes πŸ™‚ Loves Fozziemum xxx

    • Ann that is why the old ones had to go..my ankles are terrible and they had lost their support…I am sure bill as a boot wearing guy would totally get the work they do πŸ™‚ and yes I was wearing them too before fashion decided they were ‘it’….but now they rest well..perhaps Bill’s old boots could get the same send off πŸ™‚ loves Fozziemum xxx

  6. MOL..I was singing that song from the beginning when I saw your post, Fozziemum and I was saying to Granny: “I don’t know much about boots, but that boots are….were made for walking.” πŸ˜€ Pawkisses for a Sunny Day πŸ™‚ ❀

  7. What a great recycling idea, Bev! Very clever. And looks like you’ve got some nice new boots to take their place! I wonder 50 or 100 years from now, when someone comes across those boots, if they’ll start looking for the rest of the body! BWahahahaha! Okay, here’s a glimpse at my ignorance — what’s the little critter at the top of your page? Is it a porcupine or maybe a hedgehog? Can’t tell that close up! That song is perfect your boots but for some unknown reason I’ve never liked that song. Must be a subconscious thing! πŸ˜† Hope you have a wonderful week. Hugs! ❀

    • Hahaaaahah Linda the other old ones are on the scarecrow…chances are they will look for proof of life hahaaah…they do look pretty though πŸ™‚ ..the critter is an Echidna….one of Australias monotremes…we have the Platypus as the other one and they are unique as we are the only country with Monotremes..or egg laying mammals! amazing hey πŸ™‚ this is Eddy..he was a regular visitor until the block got ploughed down for a house next to us 😦 so he has moved on..we hope he comes back…Dr Google them or check my really early posts here for info…sorry bout the song hahaah maybe it is a bad childhood experience πŸ™‚ have a great week too loves Bev xxx ❀

  9. Your boots are beautiful with the flowers in them. This was a real fun type of a post. However, after reading everything your boots have done over their lifetime for you. We feel they should be bronzed and hung in the living room for permanent display. You could always put a house plant or two in them.

    Loves ya,

  10. Crikey ….. what a nice tribute to a pair of good friends. They sure have found a pretty new home, aye?? They look GREAT!! The new ones don’t look anywhere near as comfy but I guess given time …..
Mum loves the echidna header and the jacaranda colour. I do too. I found an echidna at the base of a tree soon after Mum and Dad got me. I barked and barked at it but didn’t touch it. It was the first time M and D heard me bark and they came a runnin’. I’m not much of a barker but I sure wanted ’em to see my find.

  11. Sweet Bev you and your boots walked a lot of miles and I don’t think there is a whole lot you didn’t do together. Where you have put your boots to rest is beautiful and they make a beautiful plant holder. I loved reading your goodbye to them, a bit bitter sweet. Very nice new boots and I hope they serve you as well as your others did. This is a fantastic post. Hugs

    • Jan thankyou πŸ™‚ I think my boots are happy in their retirement now! the sweet animal in my header is our resident Echidna..we have not seen Eddy since they prepared the block next door for a house..we think he has moved on which is super sad as we loved his visits..they are like our Platypus in that they are Monotremes, egg laying mammals! Australia has the only Monotremes in the world pretty cool! they eat ants and termites..they have quills made of keratin and are super strong!!! example..i have rescued a few from the road..you must be careful as they start to dig and often will injure their ‘beaks’ by doing so on bitumen..i fully grown man cannot get one out of the ground once they start to dig in! so you need to carefully dig a huge hole around them..this is what we have had to do when he has gotten to the house yard fence so we could move him away from the pups..they are very territorial and meet up every year with the same partner..their babies are called puggles πŸ™‚ a wonderful little creature that often falls victim to cars and dog attack..think I have some early posts here with video πŸ™‚ xxx
