Disappointing attitude

Imagine my delight when this morning on facebook i saw this ..

A cousin of the bowerbird, this green catbird (found in QLD and NSW) has a decidedly feline call, sounding like “a siamese cat being backed over by an SUV”. Read more: http://bit.ly/1cJaBtA

Australian Geographic's photo.
Two hours previously i had voiced my displeasure at the reference to a cat being run over..in the original post they spelled cat ‘cast’..two hours later…not only the reference was still there but they had gone to the trouble to change the spelling of cat..
As all my followers know we have gone to a lot of expense and a lot of hard manual labour to ensure our cats and dogs do NOT interfere with the lives of the birds and other creatures that share our land, it is possible to have both co-exist.
This attitude that it is ok to refer to cruelty when it comes to cats infuriates me.
People even referred to my comment and other concerned commenters that we were “thin skinned” cat owners.
Well no i have a super tough hide..it comes from dealing with the abuse suffered by cats at the hands of red necked uninformed low lifes.
Cats have a bad rap..why?
For a start THIS kind of ‘joke’ is seen as acceptable..where is the humour in this..must be very base at best to find it remotely funny.
Cats are mysterious..so what…so are many creatures in the world.
Cats are evil..well this one really does have some basis in fact..says the unicorn ..or so i am told.
As long as these types of comments are thrown away as a joke shelters will continue to see the result of cats tortured at the hands of individuals that feel they have the right to do so.
I recently Β bought my grandson some super cool items from Australian Geographic for his birthday..and sadly it will be the last time.
Any one who loves animals accepts ALL creatures play a role in our world…the good the so called ‘bad’ and the ugly..
Forrest has been bitten by Eastern browns twice..we do not like it but it happens..they live here too.
So i ask all my animal loving friends to pay a visit to their facebook page or blog..let them know your thoughts..
Like is said ..seems they were more concerned with editing the spelling than the content..
Pity i always admired their photos and looked to them for inspiration with my own wildlife photography..not any more..
This time the picture was not worth more than those few hateful words.
* also i would like to clarify that they posted this from a contributor..they are still responsible for what they choose to publish.

  1. That’s appalling, and horrible. I am speechless that a so-called science writer, and a publication like Australian Geographic would use such a sickening description…

    • I am too..and to see the way some people have called me pathetic ..’just an analogy’ one woman said…really??? this is the attitude that is fought by us all..if you have worked in shelters you know what happens..i have seen it all..burned in my mind and in my nightmares..i am furious and will never buy from their stores again..you can say they sound like a siamese that is fine ..we all know the unique sound..but to ad RUN OVER ..well beggars belief this woman purports to be an animal writer…

  2. hmmmm…sounds like you Aussies have some peeps in your ‘scientific community’ much like our USA ones who are in the Audubon Society and the Smithsonian and who tolerated some idiot suggesting that the best way to eliminate outdoor cats was to toss out Tylenol pills in one’s garden. A horribly painful and vicious death for any cat. Humans are not necessarily humane.

    • I agree..humane means nothing to some people..was pretty appalled by this total lack of forethought .,not to mention the various comments after it..seems to have revved up the cat haters..they have lost my purchases and any interest whatsoever..hope i have some shots they might like one day..will never get a hold of them that is for sure.

  3. Sorry but I no longer am on face book since my grandkids have outgrown it and I finally shut it down.

    • I do not blame you..i use it for the kids too and also for sharing things like this..pretty poor form for them not to edit or proof what they put out there..this attitude really chaps my hide!

  4. People don’t take the time to think before typing these days, it’s just become acceptable to “vomit” out whatever is top of mind regardless of how ill conceived it is. Add to this the “safe anonymity” of social media which allows small minded people the false impression of being “witty” and “clever” and often times abusive.

  5. How sad that anyone – especially those involved with animals in ANY way – can wish the worst fate on one of Mother Nature’s creatures. I don’t get it either but one thing I DO know is that there’s a lot of strange people on FB and I’ve tried to be super careful who I become “friends” with and where I leave a comment………”wolf in sheep’s clothing” comes to mind. Sad isn’t it?

  7. Sadly, I think the anonymity of the Internet has contributed to thoughtless, mean and downright cruel comments. Until we get it through thick skulls that is NOT ok, we’ll be fighting this battle of words and thoughts from the clueless for quite some time. Sigh. 😦

  9. Your opinion that all creatures have a right to be here on earth is applauded in my corner of the world. You are ahead of this family as mom hates ants real close or in the house and will get rid of them. However, out in the garden or around the grounds is OK. A case of “them or us” exists on the ant outlook. Mom is petrified of ants. All other insects are fine. Mice are my balliwhack but it has been a long time and mom puts them elsewhere if they are alive. To do no harm to others does include animals.

    • Shoko i prefer ants to not come inside too..i always try prevention first.. i did not like killing those wasps but had to after they attacked hubby…but have been looking at prevention..this attitude that cat jokes are somehow ok really really infuriates me..can you imagine the backlash to the following…eg..we have an owl here called the barking owl..it does sound like a woman screaming..ok that is the description..now would i feel the need to add to this..screaming as her husband beats her?? NO why because it is not funny at all..people can be the most stupid creatures that exist..loves Fozziemum xx

  10. What a stupid and ignorant way to describe a bird that simply sounds like a cat. Ugh. No wonder you are upset, Bev, especially since you spoke up and they basically dismissed your concerns.

    • I know..they should have either edited the post or not published it..and still people think i am sensitive..unliked the page and will let my wallet do the walking..i have bought all sorts of microscopes and fun science things from there for the grandie ..no more..people are happy to think analogies do not hurt,..there is no getting through to that mentality..

Red necks here all all idiots too..Bogans! Love that term…I think I am going to ‘adopt’….

  12. I don’t understand what some people think passes as humor. Abuse is never funny. EVER. Not in print or on television. I had a black Manx cat and I knew that he could never be allowed outside around people. It’s a heavy burden that cats are forced to bear because of ignorance.

    • M.K i know..we lost a cat to being shot where we lived before..the reason we sold and moved..people are so unbelievable..stickers like the only good cat is a dead cat seem to pass as humour..infuriates me! and yet i am the one with a ‘problem’ ?? go figure…

  13. Well that is sad using an analogy of a cat ran over by a car. Why there is no coming back from that.
I have used the analogy of a cat having his tail under a rocking chair for the sound of bagpipes, but I guess I see it as the cat having a come back. Yes like Sammy and Wally said people do blurt out anything without thinking. Society seems to be hardened and that is sad.
